If your local SEO tool tells you that you rank “#3 for plumber,” it is telling you a comforting half-truth. Local results change with the searcher’s exact location. You might be #1 on your own block and invisible four neighborhoods over. A single average rank flattens all of that into one misleading number.
How a local grid works
A geo-grid drops a matrix of virtual search points across your service area, for example a 7x7 or 11x11 grid of locations. It runs the same search from every point and records your Google Maps and local-pack position at each one. The result is a heatmap: green where you dominate, red where you disappear.
Suddenly “average rank 3” becomes a picture you can act on. You see the streets where you own the map, the edges where a competitor takes over, and the dead zones you never knew existed.
Why the map beats the average
- It is how customers actually search. “Near me” results depend on where the phone is, not where your office is.
- It finds hidden opportunity. A few yellow cells one ring out are often the cheapest wins you have.
- It exposes competitors by area. You see exactly who is beating you, and where.
- It proves progress. A grid that shifts from orange to green is a result a client can see at a glance.
What moves the grid
Local ranking still comes down to familiar levers, applied per area:
- Proximity you cannot change, but relevance and prominence you can.
- A complete, active Google Business Profile with the right primary category.
- Reviews, especially recent ones that mention the service and the area.
- Local landing pages for the neighborhoods and towns you actually serve.
- Consistent name, address and phone across the web.
Reading a grid like a pro
Start at the red. Pick the worst cluster that is still close enough to be winnable, identify the competitor who owns it, and ask what they have that you don’t: more reviews, a closer location, a dedicated service-area page. Fix one area at a time and re-scan.
Hypado’s Local Grid Tracker runs grids from 3x3 up to 11x11 on a schedule, tracks competitors and trends, and connects to your own AI so you can literally ask the map what to fix next. Scan your area free.
